Auctions Part Deux-Contemporary at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips

Andy Warhol, 200 One Dollar Bills, 1962
Christie’s contemporary sale was decent for the art market we have been experiencing this past year but Sotheby’s, oh Sotheby’s… it was like stepping back in time to 2007. The room was filled with energy and Tobias kept the pace brisk as he shot above the estimate on the majority of lots. Wow, who knew in a time when economic uncertainty still lingers that Sotheby’s would have a major sale bringing in $43 million for a Warhol alone ($134 million total)! Phillips sale was not as impressive but things were selling just below and within the estimate. It is all encouraging for the art market. Miami Basel, here we come!
