“Our Town” by Thornton Wilder

08 November 2009 | Theater

David Cromer’s direction of the three act play, “Our Town” is quite good. Though the stage manager, Jason Butler Harner, is meant to speak to the audience directly, this version takes place in a small theater setting in which the audience is included in every scene of the play; we became part of Grover’s Corners. The sparse scenery which Wilder intended adds to our involvement with the characters. Having never seen the play before I have nothing to compare it to, but I know that as it is set in 1901-1913, putting the characters in modern day clothes gives it relevance and power for today’s viewers of 2009. If you haven’t seen the play before you should head to the Barrow Street Theatre and if you have, perhaps a new twist on the familiar is just what you need for your night out.
